The value of values

When we consider our values, very often we consider these in terms of what drives our personal behaviour.

However how can values actually be attributed to bottom line benefits?

This is the subject of next weeks “Biz Growth Live” call with author and consultant Paul Kearns whose recent book “The Value Motive” presents a framework for understanding why value should be the leader’s top priority.

If you have questions about how to link corporate and personal values to bottom line profit, you can post your questions before the call here.

You can register to join this no cost teleseminar here.

Missed opportunities for our personal brand online

I had to smile when I read an article by Roger Anderson, entrepreneur, consultant and author of "Maps for Modern Magellans, Charts for captains of commerce".

I also have to thank him for his honesty and disclosure from which we can all learn.

You see Roger (aka drrogera) had a great opportunity last week to connect with Seth Godin. Roger was attending a virtual event and Seth Godin gave him great recognition for the questions he was asking. Wow well done Roger.

The only problem was that Roger had not registered into the event with his real name - rather the name he uses online "drrogera".

This meant that he missed out on an opportunity for the marketing master that is Seth Godin to give him the recognition that he was due.

It did make me reflect on what opportunities do we miss out on when attending events online or in online fora.

We are often reticent about coming forward about our name at virtual events. Why is it that is never the case at a live in person event? We even wear a name badge or if you are Scott Ginsberg, you go as far as tatooing your name badge onto yourself.

Virtual events are great if you want to learn and lurk. But remember if we provide great insights or input of value, we are sure to be remembered and perhaps even "Googled" and other attendees at our event may search us out.

So the next time you register for an online chat, webinar or teleconference take a moment to consider are you ready to stand behind your real personal brand or company brand and therefore register with your name or company name, or are you happy to miss out on potential brand recognition.

Oh and if you would like to meet the real Dr Roger Anderson, be sure to register to join me for our "Biz Growth Live" interview on the 25 June at 1pm ET(6pm Dublin and London) when I will be in conversation with Dr Roger Anderson himself about building your personal brand online.

Creating your branded media kit

As you position yourself as the expert in your field and you get sought out by clients, joint venture partners and the media, you can be sure that one of the first things they will do is do an online reference check. in other words they will "Google" you to check your reputation and the credibility of your personal brand online.

How confident are you when someone searches your website or reviews your offline marketing materials? Do they fully express your expertise? Are they "on brand"?

How comprehensive and impactful is your online media kit? If journalists or researchers take a look at your website, do your online marketing materials make it easy for them to connect with you and make their job easier so they will want to do business with you time and again?

Developing a professional and comprehensive media kit both online and in the traditional printed offline format is important for anyone who is looking to position themselves as an expert in their field. But where do you begin? And what should you include?

These are some of the questions we will be covering in our next "Biz Growth Live" call with media expert Shannon Cherry of Cherry Communications.

Your media kit is an often an overlooked element of your marketing collateral but one that can help you build your personal brand and stand out from the crowd.

If you would like to ensure that your media kit expresses your expertise and credibility, be sure to join me for the next "Biz Growth Live" teleseminar - remember it's free to join and takes place at 1pm ET/6pm Dublin and London on Monday 18 June 2007.

All you have to do is register online.
